AI support assistant MVP: define the human handoff
Scope an assistant around grounded answers, explicit limits and recoverable escalation.
A useful support assistant does more than produce an answer quickly. It needs a clear boundary around what it may answer, which information it can use and when a person should take over. Define that boundary before connecting the assistant to customer accounts or operational actions.
- 01
Choose a narrow first domain, such as explaining how to use a product's published features. Prepare a small source collection with an owner and a review process. Keep draft policies and outdated instructions out of the available material. The quality of an answer depends partly on whether the source still describes the product customers use.
- 02
Create a test set from real support questions after removing personal information. Include questions with a direct answer, ambiguous questions, missing information and requests outside the product's scope. Write the expected behavior for each category, including when the assistant should say it cannot establish an answer.
- 03
Design escalation as a usable workflow. Capture the question and the relevant context already provided, explain that a handoff occurred and tell the customer what happens next. Do not require them to repeat the entire conversation. Give the support team a way to distinguish an unanswered question from an urgent account problem.
- 04
Keep account-changing actions outside the first pilot unless they are essential. If an action is added, apply normal authorization checks, validate its inputs and require appropriate confirmation for consequential changes. A natural-language request does not replace the application's permission model.
- 05
Evaluate answer correctness and successful handoffs alongside response time. Review a sample of conversations and record whether the cited material actually supports the answer. A lower handoff rate is not automatically better: refusing to guess can be the correct result. Expand the assistant's scope only when the team can maintain the source material and explain the observed failures.
