B2B reporting dashboard MVP: agree on the metric contract
Specify definitions, freshness and reconciliation before building charts for operational decisions.
A reporting dashboard becomes useful when its users agree on what the numbers mean. Before selecting charts, identify the decision a person will make and write a short contract for each metric that supports it. This prevents a first release from becoming a collection of attractive but incompatible totals.
- 01
For a sales report, define whether revenue means orders placed, payments captured or another agreed measure. State how refunds, cancellations and time zones are handled. The definition should be understandable to the business owner and precise enough for an engineer to calculate it without guessing.
- 02
Document the source and freshness of each figure. A report refreshed overnight should not appear to describe activity up to the current minute. If an upstream import fails, preserve the last known value with its actual reporting period rather than replacing it with zero. Unavailable data and a measured zero are different states.
- 03
Create a small reconciliation dataset. Include a normal sale, a cancellation, a partial refund and an event near the reporting-day boundary. Calculate the expected result with the owner and compare it against the implementation. This turns disagreements about a chart into questions about an explicit rule.
- 04
Consider permissions before adding drill-down views. A manager may be allowed to see a team total without seeing every customer's details. Export permissions also matter: hiding fields on the page is insufficient if a downloadable file includes them. Test role boundaries using separate accounts.
- 05
For the pilot, watch whether users can answer their intended business question and explain the result. Track corrections caused by source or definition errors, and record the time needed to reconcile a disputed figure. Once those foundations hold, additional breakdowns can extend a trusted report instead of multiplying inconsistent interpretations.
