Fitness app MVP: choose the first habit before the feature list
Scope a fitness product around repeat usage, reliable logging and careful handling of personal data.
A fitness app should make one recurring activity easier. Choose the first audience and habit: a coach assigning weekly workouts, a beginner logging sessions or a studio managing attendance. These are different products with different data needs. Combining them in a first release makes it harder to understand why people return.
- 01
For a workout logging MVP, begin with a plan, a session log and a simple history. Test whether users can record a session quickly with one hand and recover an interrupted entry. Reliable saving is more valuable to that experiment than a large exercise catalogue or a social feed.
- 02
Decide what data is actually necessary. Avoid collecting sensitive health details just because a form can ask for them. Specify who can see each record, how account deletion works and what happens to exports and backups. Get qualified advice before adding diagnosis, treatment recommendations or regulated workflows.
- 03
If coaches and clients share the product, test their permissions separately. A coach should only see assigned clients. Removing a client relationship should remove access. Notifications should avoid exposing personal details on a locked screen.
- 04
Measure first-session completion and whether the same cohort records another session in the following week. Interpret these metrics alongside interviews: a missed log may mean the interface was difficult, the plan was unsuitable or the user trained without the app. Do not equate app engagement with improved health outcomes.
- 05
Introduce wearables, subscriptions or AI-generated suggestions only when they support the validated habit. Each integration adds permission, synchronization and support work. A useful first release makes its core promise consistently and gives the team evidence for the next decision.
